Migrate Kindle Highlights to Morph (They Don't Auto-Transfer)

Export your Kindle highlights from Amazon, organize in Morph. Your reading notes are now in a system you control.

What this is about

Kindle highlights are trapped in Amazon's ecosystem. Export them, import to Morph (or your note system), and own your reading notes forever.

Kindle readers wanting to back up highlights. People switching books from Kindle to Morph. Anyone wanting permanent control of their reading notes.

What you’ll learn

  • · Export all Kindle highlights from Amazon in bulk
  • · Parse highlight data to readable format
  • · Import highlights into Morph's note system
  • · Organize highlights by book in Morph reading lists
  • · Sync highlights across devices

The playbook

  1. 1

Go to Your Kindle Highlights on Amazon

Visit amazon.com → Account → Manage Your Content and Devices → Highlights. This shows all highlights from all Kindle books.

  2. 2

Select a Book and Export Highlights

Click a book title → View all highlights. Copy all highlights (Cmd+A, Cmd+C on Mac; Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C on Windows). Paste into a text file (~/highlights-bookname.txt).

  3. 3

    Repeat for All Books

For each book with highlights: Select highlights → Copy → Paste to text file. Name file bookname-highlights.txt. This takes 30 seconds per book.

  4. 4

Alternative: Use Readwise to Sync Highlights

If you use Readwise ($8.99/month), it syncs Kindle highlights automatically. Export from Readwise (Settings → Export) as CSV or JSON. This is easier than manual copy-paste.

  5. 5

Organize Highlights by Book in Morph

For each book you're importing to Morph: Create a reading list (e.g., 'Book: Pride & Prejudice - Highlights'). Open the book in Morph → Re-highlight or paste notes.

  6. 6

Import Books to Morph (If Not Already Done)

If you haven't already: Export Kindle books as EPUB (or find DRM-free versions) → Convert via Calibre if needed → Import to Morph.

  7. 7

Re-Highlight in Morph (Manual but Faster Than Typing)

Open book in Morph. Use your Kindle highlights as a reference. Highlight the same passages in Morph. Morph's highlight system is richer (add notes, colors, tags).

  8. 8

    Add Notes to Morph Highlights

Morph highlights support notes. Tap a highlight → Add Note → Type your thoughts. This turns static Kindle highlights into active study notes.

  9. 9

    Create Study Lists by Book

In Morph: Create reading lists named 'StudyNotes-BookName'. Tag highlights or create separate reading list for review. This helps you revisit key passages.

  10. 10

    Back Up Highlights to Cloud

Morph cloud-syncs all highlights. Your notes are permanently saved. Additionally, export Morph highlights periodically (future feature) or screenshot important passages for extra backup.

Common mistakes

Assuming highlights auto-transfer from Kindle to Morph—they don't

Manual export and re-highlighting is required. Or use Readwise for automatic sync.

Copying highlights without noting book/chapter—losing context

Label each text file with book name and chapter. Or use Readwise which preserves metadata.

Not re-checking Kindle highlights before exporting them all at once

First, verify you have access and know how many highlighted books you have (to estimate time).

Trying to import raw Kindle highlight HTML/JSON to Morph without parsing

Morph works with text and highlighted passages. Convert data to readable format first.

Not backing up exported highlights after getting them out of Kindle

Store highlight files in Google Drive or Dropbox as backup. If you lose them, they're gone from Kindle.

Quick wins

  • Go to amazon.com → Your Highlights
  • Pick one book with highlights
  • Copy all highlights → Paste to text file
  • Download the book as EPUB (from Gutenberg or buy DRM-free version)
  • Import EPUB to Morph
  • Re-highlight key passages using your copied highlights as guide

Morph's Highlight System > Kindle's Trapped Highlights

Kindle highlights are locked in Amazon's system. Morph gives you ownership. Highlight passages in Morph, add notes, color-code, and organize by reading list. Highlights sync across phone, web, desktop. Export anytime (future feature). Your reading notes are permanently yours, not subject to Amazon's terms. This is why migrating highlights to Morph matters: you control your data.

Frequently asked

Do highlights automatically transfer from Kindle to Morph?+
No. You must export from Kindle and manually re-highlight in Morph. Or use Readwise for automatic sync.
How long does it take to migrate 100 Kindle highlights?+
Copying from Kindle: 30 minutes. Re-highlighting in Morph: 1-2 hours. Total: manageable if you prioritize important books.
Can I use Readwise to sync Kindle highlights to Morph?+
Readwise syncs Kindle highlights to Readwise's system ($8.99/month). To get them to Morph, export from Readwise or use Readwise + Morph separately.
What format are Kindle highlights in when exported?+
Amazon's website shows them as plain text with book/chapter metadata. Readwise exports as CSV/JSON (richer). Copy-paste is simplest.
Do I need to re-read books to re-highlight them in Morph?+
No. Use your exported Kindle highlights as a reference. Jump to those passages in Morph's book, highlight, and add notes. Fast process.
Can I search my highlights across all books in Morph?+
Yes. Morph's search bar finds highlighted passages across your library. Much better than Kindle's search.
What if I have 500+ Kindle highlights?+
Readwise is the best approach (auto-sync). If manual: prioritize your 10 most important books and migrate those. Complete rest over time.
Do Kindle and Morph highlight systems work together?+
No, they're separate. Use one or the other. Morph is better for active reading and note-taking.
