Migrate from Instapaper—Add TTS to Your Articles in Morph
Instapaper charges for features. Morph includes unlimited articles + TTS narration for less.
What this is about
Instapaper ($11.99/year paid) is simple but limited. Morph ($7.99/month) adds TTS—turn articles into audiobooks. Synced reading is 20-30% faster.
Instapaper users who want TTS narration or cheaper unlimited reading. People reading long-form articles and wanting listen-while-reading option.
What you’ll learn
- · Export Instapaper articles as HTML or archive
- · Convert to EPUB or keep as-is for Morph import
- · Enable TTS on imported articles
- · Migrate your folders/tags to Morph reading lists
- · Verify all articles transferred successfully
The playbook
- 1
Back Up Your Instapaper Library
Go to instapaper.com → Settings (gear) → Account → Download Archive. Instapaper sends an HTML file with all saved articles, tags, and reading status. Save to ~/Downloads.
- 2
Check Your Folders and Tags
In Instapaper, click each folder (Unread, Archive, Starred, custom folders). Screenshot the folder names and count of articles. You'll recreate these as Morph reading lists.
- 3
Download the Archive File
Instapaper emails you the export. Click the link or manual download from Settings. The HTML archive contains all articles, links, and metadata (~1-5 MB depending on library size).
- 4
Back Up to Cloud Storage
Upload the HTML to Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive immediately. This is your permanent archive.
- 5
Convert to EPUB with Calibre (Optional)
For easier import: Download Calibre → Add Books → Select HTML → Convert to EPUB → OK. Creates an EPUB version compatible with Morph.
- 6
Import into Morph
Open Morph app → Library → '+' → 'Import from Files'. Select EPUB or HTML. Files sync to cloud.
- 7
Enable TTS on Imported Articles
Open an article → Speaker icon → Choose voice and speed. Test quality. Adjust as needed.
- 8
Create Morph Reading Lists from Instapaper Folders
In Morph → Reading Lists → Create list for each Instapaper folder (Unread, Archived, Starred, custom). Add articles to relevant lists.
- 9
Test Synced Read-and-Listen Feature
Open an article → 'Read + Listen' ON. This is what Instapaper doesn't offer. Synced reading is Morph's main advantage.
- 10
Download for Offline Access
Select important articles → Download (cloud icon). Articles cache locally for offline reading anywhere.
Common mistakes
✗Not converting HTML to EPUB—trying to import raw HTML
→Calibre conversion ensures better formatting. Use EPUB format for import.
✗Assuming Instapaper's read/unread status transfers to Morph
→Status doesn't auto-map. You'll manually archive articles in Morph as you read.
✗Not backing up the HTML before converting or importing
→Keep the original HTML as a permanent archive. Cloud backup is essential.
✗Recreating folder structure in Morph too precisely—overcomplicating
→Morph reading lists are simpler. Keep structure minimal: 3-5 lists max. Morph's search handles the rest.
✗Not testing TTS quality before committing to full import
→Test with one article. If voice doesn't suit you, adjust before processing hundreds.
Quick wins
- Go to instapaper.com → Settings → Download Archive
- Wait for email (usually within 10 minutes)
- Download the HTML file
- Upload to Google Drive (backup immediately)
- Convert one article to EPUB using Calibre
- Import to Morph and test TTS
Morph Adds TTS to Instapaper's Simple Approach
Instapaper is simple reading—no TTS, no narration. Morph keeps simplicity but adds TTS narration (turn articles into audiobooks). Synced read-and-listen lets you read + hear simultaneously—20-30% faster comprehension. Your library syncs everywhere. Offline access. Cloud backup. Cheaper than Instapaper paid. For people who want reading app + audiobook in one, Morph wins.
