Readwise Reader Costs Too Much—Switch to Morph for Reading

Readwise Reader is $11.99/month. Morph is $7.99/month unlimited reading + TTS. Plus synced read-and-listen.

What this is about

Readwise Reader is a premium reading app with paywall. Morph is cheaper, includes TTS narration, and synced read-and-listen works better than Reader's listen-only mode.

Readwise Reader users frustrated with cost or feature limits. People using Reader for article reading, not for highlights/notes management (that stays in Readwise).

What you’ll learn

  • · Export articles from Readwise Reader
  • · Understand what does and doesn't transfer (highlights: no, articles: yes)
  • · Import into Morph with full cloud sync
  • · Set up TTS narration on imported articles
  • · Organize by reading lists in Morph

The playbook

  1. 1

    Audit Your Reader Library

Open Readwise Reader → Library. Note how many articles/books you have. Screenshot important reading lists or saved items. You'll recreate these in Morph.

  2. 2

    Export Articles from Reader

Readwise Reader → Settings → Export. Choose format (HTML, JSON, or CSV). Export all articles. This creates a data dump with article URLs, titles, and metadata.

  3. 3

Download and Parse the Export File

Save the export (HTML/JSON) to ~/Downloads. If JSON, you can open in a text editor or convert to readable format using a JSON parser. HTML is browser-readable.

  4. 4

Convert Articles to EPUB or PDF

For each article: Use web-to-PDF (Print → Save as PDF from browser), or convert HTML to EPUB with Calibre. Store all in one folder (~/Downloads/reader-articles).

  5. 5

    Import into Morph

Open Morph app → Library → '+' → 'Import from Files'. Select EPUBs/PDFs. They sync to your library across devices.

  6. 6

    Enable TTS on Each Article

Open an article → Speaker icon → Choose TTS voice and speed. Test the first few to confirm quality and formatting.

  7. 7

    Create Reading Lists by Topic

In Morph → Reading Lists → Create new list (match your Reader lists: 'Tech', 'Newsletter', 'Saved For Later'). Add articles to relevant lists.

  8. 8

    Understand Highlights Limitations

Readwise Reader highlights don't auto-transfer to Morph. But Morph has its own highlight system. Re-highlight as you read in Morph (or skip highlighting if not priority).

  9. 9

    Set Up Synced Read-and-Listen

Open an article → 'Read + Listen' ON. Text + TTS synced. This is Morph's advantage over Reader's listen-only mode. Much faster reading.

  10. 10

    Cancel Readwise Reader Subscription

Open Reader app → Settings → Manage Subscription → Cancel. Note: Canceling Reader doesn't cancel Readwise (your highlights/notes app). They're separate subscriptions.

Common mistakes

Expecting highlights to auto-transfer from Reader to Morph

They don't. Highlights export from Reader, but Morph doesn't auto-import. Re-highlight manually or skip if not essential.

Confusing Readwise and Readwise Reader—they're separate apps

Readwise = highlights/notes manager ($8.99/month). Reader = reading app ($11.99/month). You might keep Readwise for highlights, cancel Reader only.

Not converting articles to EPUB/PDF before importing to Morph

Morph works best with structured files (EPUB, PDF). Raw HTML or JSON requires conversion first.

Assuming Reader's reading list organization auto-maps to Morph

You'll manually create Morph reading lists and assign articles. Takes 10-15 minutes for a full library.

Not testing TTS quality before batch-importing everything

Test with 1-2 articles first. If voice/speed doesn't suit you, adjust before processing whole library.

Quick wins

  • Open Readwise Reader and check export options in Settings
  • Export your library (takes 2-3 minutes)
  • Download the export file
  • Convert one article to EPUB using Calibre or web-to-PDF
  • Import into Morph and enable TTS
  • Cancel Reader subscription

Why Morph Beats Readwise Reader

Reader costs $11.99/month for limited features. Morph is $7.99/month unlimited articles + TTS. Reader's listen-only mode is passive. Morph's synced read-and-listen is 20-30% faster and more engaging. Your library syncs across phone, web, desktop. Offline download works everywhere. No subscription creep. Readwise (highlights) and Morph (reading) are both affordable separately. Together, they're the best reading ecosystem.

Frequently asked

Do I have to cancel Readwise (highlights app) if I cancel Reader?+
No. Readwise and Readwise Reader are separate subscriptions. You can keep Readwise ($8.99/month) and cancel Reader ($11.99/month).
Can my Reader highlights transfer to Morph?+
Not automatically. You can export highlights from Reader, but Morph doesn't auto-import them. Manually re-highlight in Morph if important.
How do I export articles from Reader?+
Reader → Settings → Export. Choose HTML, JSON, or CSV format. Download your data file. Takes 1-2 minutes.
What if I have hundreds of Reader articles—is migration time-consuming?+
Export and batch-convert take 30 minutes. Organizing into Morph lists takes 1-2 hours for 500+ articles (optional but recommended).
Is Morph's TTS as good as Reader's?+
Reader uses ElevenLabs; Morph also uses ElevenLabs + other TTS. Voices are comparable. Synced reading compensates for any voice differences.
Can I read Morph articles on web like Reader?+
Yes. Morph.com has web app. Syncs with phone/desktop. Open any article and read or listen.
Does Reader have features Morph doesn't?+
Reader offers annotation tools specific to research. Morph focuses on reading + listening. For heavy research annotation, Reader may be better; Morph is better for volume.
How do I organize articles in Morph if I don't want to create lists?+
Articles appear in your Library by default. You can search by title. Reading lists are optional; your library is automatically searchable.

Your whole library, read to you.

Bring your EPUBs, save the articles you meant to read, and listen with Morph's own voices — offline, on your phone.
